During summer a decompression chamber was transported from Australia to St. Petersburg in Russia, a major difference in climates. The device, with its sensitive electronic equipment, valves and gaskets has had problems in the past with corrosion, especially during storage in cold, wet climates.
Learn MoreOil-free Protection – New Trend in China’s Industry for Corrosion Protection

A new trend in corrosion protection is prevalent in China: Despite the convenience of using wax or oil for temporary corrosion protection “Oil-free” is the new focus. This focus was also the main topic of last year’s conference of the Wuhan Research institute of Materials Protections, held in the eastern coastal city of Ningbo, China. Since long, and especially last year at the conference, a main theme has been the usage of less oil or complete avoidance for corrosion protection for industrial use.
Learn MoreHumans’ Interactions With Nature

It is in human nature to explore as much as it in human nature to change the world. Ship wreck exploration is a fun intersection between these two truths. As a Midwesterner I do not think of myself as proximate to any great aquatic adventures but, alarmingly, this winter has proved me wrong. Because this was one of the warmest winters on record, this year’s ice sheets from the East Coast have cleared the Great Lakes of sediment and have made them clear enough that the lakes’ bottoms can be seen from airplanes (and they will continue to be clear until agricultural runoff and blooming algae muddy the water).

On March 1st 60 Minutes ran a report on Lumber Liquidators laminated flooring that outgasses formaldehyde at levels that exceed California Air Resources Board acceptable limits, which were adopted by congress in the Formaldehyde Standards Act of 2010 (which will take effect across the country this year). The problem is not that formaldehyde is used during production of flooring, but the levels at which it is used by factories is unacceptable and has resulted in the flooring outgassing at levels significantly higher than it should be, and this flooring is now in thousands of homes.

A pair of hunters recently discovered one of the few woolly rhinos, and the only calf, found in Russia. Scientists are now examining the body for any usable DNA to determine which living rhino is most closely related to the one found. This practice is not unique; other studies have worked to determine the lineage of other animals and even people.
One of the more fascinating examples of this is Otzi the Iceman, found in the Alps between Austria and Italy. Scientists have been able to make many inferences into what his life was like, because he was so well preserved, his diet, health, and cause of death. Most interestingly scientists were able to find at least 19 of his genetic relatives.
